Abstract Text Significant part of installed capacities for electricity generation in Electric Power Industry of Serbia bases its operation on coal or domestic energy sources, still representing the support of the entire Serbian power system with its proven and perspective reserves. Installed capacities of coal fired thermal power plants is 3936 MW with average total annual generation of 23 400 GWh. Consequently, coal production of 32 million tons a year should be provided. Complex geological structure of EPS mining basins, physical – chemical characteristics, technological factor of lignite mining on one hand and the need of EPS thermal power capacities for stabile and continuous production of this energy source on the other hand, orient in strategic terms the need for best possible utilisation of lignite as well as efficient operation of thermal power capacities of Electric power industry of Serbia. « hide
